ALMA NETS FIVE PLAYERS ON ALL-MIAA SOFTBALL TEAMS

On Wednesday, Alma College, winners of the MIAA Softball Tournament last weekend, had five players named All-MIAA in a vote by the league’s coaches. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht, P Tara Leddy and 1B Emily Ross were named to the first team, while C Trista-Lynne Geier and RF Sarah Johnson earned second team honors.

Koenigsknecht, a sophomore from Fowler, MI/Fowler, is batting .406 on the year and leads the team with 52 hits. She has four doubles, one homerun and has 15 RBI’s. She has stolen 27 bases (on 30 attempts), which has placed her in the top ten of the country all season long. She also has great range on the defensive side of the ball at the center field position.

Leddy is the Scots’ top pitcher in 2009 and has a record 13-4 heading into the NCAA Regionals. A sophomore from Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley, Leddy had 15 complete games and had 102 strikeouts in 118.1/3 innings. She recorded two big wins during Alma’s run to the MIAA Tournament Championship last weekend.

Freshman Emily Ross (Buchanan, MI/Buchanan) became a starter at first base after the team returned from Florida in February, and took full advantage of her opportunity. She leads Alma with four homeruns in just 65 at bats and also has two doubles on the 2009 season. She hit a huge three-run homer against Trine last Friday, that proved to be he difference in the second game of the MIAA Tournament.

Geier, one of four Alma seniors, has been a steady leader behind the plate and has had a big influence on the Scots’ young pitchers. Geier, from Livonia, MI/Walled Lake Western, is hitting .338 in 2009 with a homer, 12 RBI’s and five doubles. In the final game of the MIAA Tournament, she had a couple of important at bats that produced runs for the Scots in their victory.

Junior Sarah Johnson (Portland, MI/Portland), is second on the team with 33 RBI’s and has three homeruns, three doubles and two triples during 2009. Adept at putting the bat on the ball, she has struck out just four times in 115 appearances at the plate and her 40 hits trails only Koenigsknecht. In the deciding game of the MIAA Tournament, Johnson led the way by going four for four in the Scots’ Championship win.

Alma begins NCAA Regional play on Thursday, when they take on Concordia (WI) in Bloomington, IL. The game, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University, begins at Noon locally and 1:00 p.m. Alma time.

Alma's "green" residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.
