SCOTS SOFTBALL PLAYERS BRITTANY FALES AND TARA LEDDY NAMED MIAA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has named Alma College Third Baseman Brittany Fales and Pitcher Tara Leddy as its Players of the Week in softball for the week ending May 3.

Position Player of the Week:

Fales, a senior from Midland, MI/ Dow, set the tone for the Scots’ run to the MIAA tournament championship in an opening-game victory over Adrian. She belted a two-run homer in the first inning, then delivered a clutch two-run single with two out in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and propel the Scots to a 5-3 victory.

She went 4-for-10 for the tournament at the plate for a .400 average and also sparkled defensively with several outstanding plays, handling 12 out of a possible 13 chances. Fales leads the Scots with 34 RBI this season.

Pitcher of the Week:

Leddy, a sophomore from Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley pitched a pair of complete games against Adrian in leading Alma to the MIAA tournament championship. In the first game, she scattered eight hits, walked only one batter and struck out nine in the Scots’ 5-3 win.

In the championship round, she allowed only one earned run and worked out of several jams, stranding nine Bulldogs on base, in leading Alma to a 7-3 victory that clinched the title and an NCAA tournament berth. Leddy is 13-4 on the season with 102 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings.
 

 

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 27th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
