ALMA SOFTBALL DEFEATS HEIDELBERG IN FIRST HOME GAME OF THE SEASON 8-0 IN 5 INNINGS

In the 2009 home opener for Alma’s Softball team, the defending MIAA regular season Champion, the Scots defeated Heidelberg University by a score of 8-0 in five innings at a frigid Scots Park. The win improved the Scots’ record to 7-5, while Heidelberg fell to 2-9 on the season.

Alma jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when So. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler) reached on an error by the shortstop and scored on a very rare feat, by stealing all three remaining bases. After a scoreless second and top of the third inning, Alma busted out for four runs in the bottom of the third.

Koenigsknecht began the inning and stole second base and after a bunt single by Jr. LF Kelsey Rightenburg (Lexington, MI/Croswell/Lexington), the Scots had runners on first and third. After a strikeout, So. DH Erika Brower (Allegan, MI/Allegan) singled, scoring Koenigsknecht. The other runs batted in for the Scots came from Jr. RF Sarah Johnson (Portland, MI/Portland) on a single, by Jr. SS Houston Verbeck (Burton, MI/Flint/Kearsley) on a sacrifice fly out and Jr. 2B Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge, MI/Grand Ledge) on a single.

Alma closed out the scoring and the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Rightenburg singled with one out and scored on a double by Sr. 3B Brittany Fales (Midland, MI/Midland Dow), who advanced to third on the throw home. On the next at bat, Brower reached on a fielder’s choice as Fales was thrown out at the plate. After a single by Johnson, Verbeck tripled down the left field line, scoring both Brower and Johnson for the 8-0 lead.

So. P Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) went the distance for the Scots and gave up three hits in five innings, with four strikeouts and two walks in earning the win.
