ALMA DEFEATS CONCORDIA 13-1

Against Concordia in the second game of the day (Scots dropped a game against Davenport earlier in the day), Alma belted fifteen hits, including Homeruns by Verbeck and a Grand Slam by Johnson. So. Brittany Grys (Portland,MI/Portland) (2-1) picked up her second win of the season in going the distance in the five-inning shortened game.

Alma came out of the gates by scoring in the top of the first inning. Koenigsknecht led off with a single to right field, stole second base and scored on a RBI single by Sr. Brittany Fales (Midland, MI/Midland Dow). The Scots scored their second run an inning later on an RBI single by Koenigsknecht, knocking in Jr. Cassie Schwab (Midland, MI/Midland).

Verbeck belted her first homerun of the season with a two run dinger to left in the third inning. In the fourth, the Scots scored nine runs on eight hits, highlighted by Johnson’s grand slam. All nine players scored in the inning as Alma brought thirteen players to the plate.

 

Alma College's partnership with the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force, an EPA-sanctioned Community Advisory Group (CAG), received the 2008 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration, sponsored by Michigan Campus Compact. The Task Force is recognized as one of the most influential and active CAGs nationally and as having the largest membership of any CAG in the United States.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 27th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
