SOFTBALL: Morcom One of Six Scots Honored on All-MIAA Teams

May 6, 2008

The MIAA Softball Coaches meeting was held today to vote for the 2008 All-MIAA Teams and six Alma College Players were honored for their part in leading the Maroon and Cream to the MIAA regular season championship.

Leading the way was senior Missy Morcom (Chelsea) who was honored for the second time in her outstanding career with the Scots. Morcom finished the conference season with a batting average of .419 and led the Scots with 16 RBI's and seven doubles. Morcom finished in the top five in the league in on base percentage, doubles, and was first in the MIAA with 20 walks. Morcom was also a fearsome defender who was rarely tested by baserunners out of centerfield and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on the year.

Junior pitcher Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) was also honored with her second career First Team All-MIAA nod. Koechling went 8-1 in conference play and boasted an excellent 2.33 ERA. In 45 innings pitched, Koechling struck out 26 batters while giving up only nine walks and 15 runs. She was in the top five in almost every important pitching statistic in the league including ERA, opposing batting average, and strike outs.

Fellow junior, Brittany Fales (Alma) set the conference on fire all season with her offensive production and earned her first career First Team award. Fales, who holds down the hot corner for the Scots, led the Scots with a .477 batting average and had a ridiculous .795 slugging percentage while getting on base 54 percent of the time in league play. Fales also showed off her skills on the defensive side of the ball as she had only one error in league play.

Freshman pitcher, Tara Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley), rounded out the the Scots' First Team honorees. Leddy stepped up and proved that she will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come in the MIAA, piling up a 6-1 record in league play and saving two games in relief. Leddy struck out 45 batters in 53 and two thirds innings pitched while allowing only 51 hits and giving up 19 walks. Finishing in the top five in the MIAA in ERA, opposing batting average, wins, strike outs, saves, innings pitched, appearances, batters stuck out looking, and runs allowed- Leddy, as a freshman, is already among the elite in the MIAA ranks.

Earning Second Team honors for the Scots are a pair of seniors who have came to work every day for the Maroon and Cream for the past four years and have proven to be well rounded members of the Alma College Softball Team.

Taylor Erwin (Fenton) hit over .300 while playing outstanding firstbase for the Scots all season. Erwin finished the year with a slugging percentage and on base percentage bordering on .400 in the league play and had 95 putouts while having only one error.

Fellow senior, Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant), also garnered Second Team honors for her play at the plate and at shortstop for the Scots. Gaudard was one of Alma's best offensive players all season and finished league play with a batting average of .429 and a slugging percentage of .735. Gaudard also reached base 48 percent of the time and had a fielding percentage of .911 in conference play.

The Scots, led by these six outstanding players, will leave for Illinois tomorrow to participate in the NCAA DIII Championship Tournament.

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.
