SOFTBALL: Scots Drop a Pair of Close ones to Lake Superior State

April 17, 2008

Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Softball Team (18-8) hosted Division II Lake Superior State University (8-24) for a double header at Scots' Park in hopes of taking a couple from the GLIAC opponent and had their chances before falling in two heart breakers by the scores of 3-2 and 7-4.

The Maroon and Cream never really got their bats going in the first game and finished with only six hits. Sarah Seals (Alma) and Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) both recorded hits in the games and accounted for both the of the Scot' runs batted in.

Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) pitched her usual solid game for Alma scattering five hits and three earned in seven innings but didn't get the run support she needed, picking up the loss to fall to 8-2 on the year.

Game 1 Box Score

In the second game, the Scots looked to have it in the bag as they held the lead all the way until the top of the seventh win a LSSU player knocked out a solo homerun to tie the game at four and send it to extra innings. Less than solid defense in the top of the eighth led to three runs and the 7-4 win for the Lakers.

Tara Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) struggled through most of the day but managed to pitch herself out of jams, giving up only four earned on 14 hits on her way to her fifth loss of the season.

Missy Morcom (Chelsea) had a solid game at the plate going two for four with two runs scored including the go ahead in the bottom of the sixth. Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge), Sarah Johnson (Portland), and Taylor Erwin (Fenton) each added two hits in the loss.

Game 2 Box Score

The Scots will need to bounce back quickly from today's losses as they will play host to a double header against Tri-State University next Tuesday that may decide who will host the MIAA Tournament in May.
