SOFTBALL: Scots Finish in Florida with a 2-1 Win

Mar. 2, 2008

The Alma College softball team concluded their spring trip on Sunday in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 victory over DeSales University in Ft. Myers Fl. The win push the Scots to a 6-5 overall record for the week. Freshman Tara Leddy (Saginaw) was nearly perfect in the game giving up three hits and striking out twelve. Alma got on the board in the third inning with a leadoff bunt single that hugged the thirdbase line by Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler). Koenigsknecht stoled second base on the next pitch. Missy Morcom(Chelsea) followed with a deep fly ball to the fence in centerfield which was caught. Koenigsknecht tagged at second base and scored on the play to give the Scots the lead. Alma added the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs Morcom reached base on a fielders choice, stole second and Amy Gaudard(Mt Pleasant) drilled a RBI single up the middle.

Desales did not go quietly in the seventh as they loaded the bases on three Scots errors with no one out. Leddy proceeded to strikeout the next hitter and the following hitter grounded out to Gaudard but a run scored on the play. Leddy then struckout the last hitter on three pitches to end the game.

"Overall, I'm pleased with how the week went," quoted Head Coach Denny Griffin. "We made great strides in what this team can do and will accomplish. We will take the next two weeks to regroup, make some minor tuneups and get ready for our home opener with Bluffton Unversity."
