The Alma College softball team improved to 5-5 with a split Saturday in Ft Myers Fl. In the opener Alma banged out eleven hits to rout Johnson and Wales University 15-2. In the second game the Scots lost a heartbreaker in eight innings to New York Institute of Technology 5-4. Alma scored a run in the third to knot the score at one apiece with a leadoff single by Trista Geier(Walled Lake Central) who was sacrifice to second by Kelsey Rigthtenburg (Croswell). Katie Koechling (Wheaton) was cruising along through five with eight strikeouts and only giving up four hits. But three consecutive hits including a RBI double in the sixth brought in Tara Leddy (Saginaw) who managed to get the next three batters out. New Your added another run in the top of the seventh on an inside the park homerun to put New Your up by two. However the Scots would not go quietly as they scored two runs to force the extra inning game.  Miller started the rally by getting on base with an error and Gaudard walked. Verbeck sacrificed both up a base and Sarah Johnson hit a rope to left field to score Miller. With runners at the corners and one out Taylor Erwin (Fenton) hit an RBI ground out to tie the score at four.

The international tie breaker was used in the Eighth and New York pushed their runner across the plate by a sacrifice and a ground out. In the bottom of  the inning Erika Brower (Allegan) started at second base and advanced to third on a pass ball. Two pitches later Morcom walked to put runners at the corners with no outs. Miller sacrifice Morcom to second and on the same play Brower was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Gaudard grounded out to the third baseman to end the game.

Alma will conclude its Florida trip on Sunday at 9 am with a single game versus Desales University.
