SOFTBALL: Scots Drop Two on Day Two in Florida

Alma College softball dropped a pair of games on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Softball Tournament. Mercyhurst College scored six runs in the third inning and held on to a 6-3 victory in the opener.

Junior Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill) suffered her first loss of the season going six innings and Junior Jamie Christian (Armada) pitched the seventh.

The Scots scored first in the opening frame with a walk to Missy Morcom (Chelsea) and a RBI single by Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant). The Scots offense was silent until the seventh when Alma scored two runs on three hits.

In the second game freshman Tara Leddy (Saginaw) pitched a strong outing but lost her second game of the year 4-0 to Concordia University-St. Paul. Concordia scored all their runs in the third inning on two walks, a single and a three run homerun. The Scots had runners in scoring position on three different occasions but failed to get the RBI hit. Morcom led the charge collected  half of the team’s hits with two singles and a double.

Alma will return to action in Ft Myers, Fl on Thursday with a doubleheader against Johnson and Wales and Mercyhurst College.

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its sixth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2007. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.

Dennis Griffin

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
