SOFTBALL: Scots Split In Opening Day of Action

Feb. 23, 2008

The Alma College Softball Team opened the 2008 campaign in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday with two one-run games. In the opener, the Scots rallied for two runs in the fifth inning to beat Division II Concordia University 2-1.

Katie Koechling (Wheaton, ILL) went the distance, picking up her first win of the season while striking out nine.

In the fifth inning, Taylor Erwin (Fenton) led off with a single to centerfield. Erwin stole second base and Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge) walked  to set the stage for Sarah Johnson’s (Portland) RBI single to left field scoring Erwin. Brittany Fales (Midland) followed with another RBI single down the left field line, plating Miller to give the Scots their margin of victory.

Concordia scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth and had bases loaded but Koechling retired the final two hitters on ground outs to quiet the rally.

In the second game, Division II Mercyhurst College scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Scots 3-2.

Freshman Tara Leddy (Saginaw) picked up her first loss of her career striking out seven and giving up five hits.

Alma scored in their half of the first inning with a walk to Miller. A wild pitch moved her to second and an error by the shortstop allowed Miller to score. In the top half of the sixth, Alma broke the deadlock by scoring a run. Taylor Erwin (Fenton)  led off with a single up the middle, Sarah Seals (Alma) sacrificed her to second, and Missy Morcom (Chelsea) drilled an RBI single to left field. The Scots did not go quietly in the seventh. Miller and Amy Gaudard (Mt.Pleasant) led off with back to back singles. Johnson sacrificed, advancing them to second and third. A failed squeeze caught Miller at the plate and an infield fly ended the rally.

Alma had eight hits in the game and a base runner in every inning. The defense was flawless and did not commit an error in either game. According to Head Coach Denny Griffin, "We  played well in our opening day and should have won two games. We stranded too many runners on base and missed some scoring opportunities which will change as we play more games."

Alma continues their southern trip on Tuesday with the same two teams, Mercyhurst at 9am and Concordia at 1pm.
