SOFTBALL: Scots Win 12-0 in First Round NCAA Action

Coming off an MIAA Tournament that saw the Scots struggle at the bat, Alma College rolled out 12 runs in five innings getting the dominating win and advancing into the second round of the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) started the game on the mound for the Scots and pitched four innings, giving up one hit while striking out seven on her way to the win. Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) finished the game for the Scots getting some valuable experience and closing out the five inning, 12-0, mercy rule, shutout win.

The Scots busted open the game with a five run second inning spurred by a two run blast off the bat of sophomore Trista-Lynne Geier (West Bloomfield/Walled Lake Western) that cleared the seven foot high left field fence.

Alma added four more runs in the third, and two more in the fourth, qualifying for the fifth inning mercy rule.

Missy Morcom (Chelsea/Chelsea) had a great game at the plate for the Scots going two for three with two RBIs and three runs scored. Sarah Johnson (Portland) also went two for three with three RBIs, and Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) went one for one with a run scored and three RBIs.

The Scots advance to the second round where they will face the winner of the DePauw University vs. Allegheny College game, which is currently in progress, tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Dennis Griffin

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
