SOFTBALL: Scots Win Co-MIAA Championship, Earn Automatic Bid to NCAA TOURNAMENT

Alma, Mi.- The Scots did not win the MIAA Tournament, but with an outstanding regular season record and a strong Tournament showing, they earned the title of 2007 MIAA Co-Champions and received the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Alma College will be travelling to Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio for the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Scots are the three seed in the tournament and will face the six seed Maryville College Scots in the first round.

Maryville had a 23-11 record that earned them an at large birth into the tournament. With them comes the Great Sout Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Angie Castle, who boasts a 15-2 record and an ERA of 1.17 in 119 innings pitched.

Lindsy Little leads the Maryville College Scots offense with a BA of .382. She also hit nine round trippers and 42 doubles on the season.

MARYVILLE COLLEGE 2007 STATS

The Alma College Scots will not be an easy out for any team in the NCAA Tournament. The Scots will be led into action by senior pitcher Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant). McDonald has dominated opponents on her way to a 15-3 record and a 1.25 ERA. Alma has depth at the pitcher position with number two starter Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton N.) racking up a 11-5 record with a slim 2.89 ERA.

As stiff pitching throughout the tournament is expected, the task of run support for Scots' pitchers will fall on a willing and ready Alma offense. Freshman Houston Verbeck (Flint/Kearsley) has flashed a hot bat for the Scots all season compiling a .402 batting average with an on base percentage of .425. Junior Missy Morcom (Chelsea) should be feared where ever she takes the field as she posesses the power to go deep at anytime hitting ten long shots on the year and knocking in a team high 30 RBIs. Alma presents a lineup that has no easy outs and is capable of producing from any spot as six regular starters hit over .300 on the year.

The Scots of Alma College will face off against the Scots of Maryville College on Thursday at 2 p.m.
