SOFTBALL: Scots take two from Calvin

The Scots went to Calvin knowing that with two wins they could wrap up the MIAA regular season championship. Alma got those two wins today, 5-0 and 12-0.

The first game of the double header was a pitcher's battle for the first five innings. However, the Scots came up in the sixth with the score 0-0 and piled up the only five runs of th game. Junior Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) started out the inning with a single and was driven in when freshman Houston Verbeck (Flint/Kearsley)  hit a double to center. Sophomore Brittany Fales (Midland/Midland Dow), junior Taylor Erwin (Fenton), and junior Missy Morcom (Chelsea) all did damage with singles in the five hit, five run inning.

Senior Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) pitched another gem for the Scots. Today's performance was a complete game-four hit-nine strike out domination that improved her record to 14-3 on the season.

The second game of today's double header can only be described as an offensive explosion by the Scots as they put Calvin away in five innings by the score 12-0.

Alma put up four spots on the board in the second, third, fourth inning. Missy Morcom did her part going two for three with two RBI's and two runs scored. Freshman DH Sarah Johnson (Portland) also went two for three with an RBI and Houston Verbeck went two for three with two runs scored. Sophomore Tracy Blessing (Birch Run) and Amy Gaudard added two RBI's each and senior Emily Blahnik (Corunna) knocked one in and scored two runs in the win.

Sophomore Katie Koechling (Wheaton Ill./Wheaton N.) only allowed two base runners in five innings while striking out 11 getting her eleventh win of the year.
