SOFTBALL: Alma Splits With Tri-State

After gliding to a 10-0 start in conference play, the Scots dropped their first MIAA game today splitting a double header with Tri-State University.

Alma's offense started play today providing plenty of support for starting pitcher senior Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) as they scored eight runs on nine hits, tallying atleast one run in six of the seven innings.

Leading the way for the Scots was freshman DH Sarah Johnson (Portland) who went two for three with an RBI and a run scored and fellow freshman leftfielder Houston Verbeck (Flint/Klearsley) who went three for four with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Missy Morcom (Chelsea), freshman Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge), junior Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) all contributed an RBI in the Scots effort and junior Taylor Erwin (Fenton) added two.

McDonald got the win for the Scots, improving her record to 13-2 on the season.  McDonald scattered nine hits and four earned runs in an 11 strikeout performance.

In the second game of the double header, the Scots jumped out to an early lead behind an RBI single in the bottom of the third by Morcom scoring Erwin.

 

Tri-State came back in the top of the fifth scoring three runs on three hits. Alma added another run in their turn in the fifth and a third in the sixth.  Tri-State added two more runs in the top of the seventh putting them in front for the win, 5-3.

 

Sophomore Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) got the loss for the Scots. Koechling gave up five runs on thirteen hits in a complete game performance.

Missy Morcom had another solid game for the Scots going three for four with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge) and Houston Verbeck each added a hit and an RBI for the Scots.

The Scots host Hope tomorrow, April 25. The games are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. and will have major ramifications in the top of the MIAA standings.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ‘07 students explored important cultural sites in China, worked to restore a Jewish Holocaust cemetery in Poland, analyzed ethic politics in Scotland, and studied medieval literature in London.

Dennis Griffin

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
