SOFTBALL: Scots sweep Adrian in crucial MIAA play

Alma, Mi., Strong pitching, solid defense, and consistent and timely hitting led to the Alma College Softball team taking two games from Adrian College 4-0 and 11-4 respectively.

Senior pitcher Kay McDonald (Shepherd/Mt. Pleasant) dominated the first game striking out 13 while only giving up three hits and facing only 23 batters in her seven inning  near perfect performance.

Alma's offense jumped on Adrian early scoring all four of their runs in the first two innings of the contest including two round trippers in the first. Junior Missy Morcom (Chelsea) led off the first inning with a double before she trotted home watching the rocket teammate freshman Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge) shot over the left field fence. Junior Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant), not to be out done by her underclassman, followed with a shot over the left field fence of her own.

The Scots scored their only other run of the game the old fashioned way. Morcom reached on a walk, was sacraficed to second, and scored on a single off the bat of Gaudard.

Freshmen Sarah Johnson (Portland) and Houston Verbeck (Flint/Kearsley) each added two hits in the win.

Spurred behind a three hit five RBI game by Morcom, the Scots marched onto the 11-4 win in the second game of the double header.

Eight different Scots posted hits as the runs piled up early and often. Sarah Johnson gave whole new meaning to the title Designated Hitter as she had three hits, two RBI's, and scored two runs in her four at bats. Sophomore Brittany Fales (Midland/Midland Dow) also went three for four with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Taylor Erwin (Fenton) added two hits in the win.

Katie Koechling (Wheaton Ill./Wheaton North), sophomore pitcher, scattered eight hits and four earned runs while recording nine strikeouts on her way to the win.

The two W's keep Alma on top of the MIAA standings and in the front seat for hosting the MIAA Tournament.

Alma next takes the field on April 24 as they travel to Tri-State University. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
