Kay McDonald Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College softball senior Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced. She won three games last week, including two MIAA wins. She also recorded another MIAA save.

McDonald struck out 35 batters in 22 innings and pitched a four-hit shutout against Albion, 8-0, defeated Division II Northwood 2-1 on a five-hitter and allowed an 11-1 Saint Mary's team just five hits in a 9-1 win.

McDonald is 9-2 on the season while the team has a 17-7 record and a 4-0 mark in MIAA games. McDonald has kept her ERA to just 0.89 in 78.2 innings of work and is holding batters to an average of just .171.

The Scots return to the field Apr. 3 when they host Adrian College at 3:30 p.m.

 

Alma College is among the six percent of all colleges and universities in the nation to hold membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
