Alma Softball Moves to 4-2 After Tuesday Split

The Alma College softball team improved to 4-2 by splitting a pair of games on Tuesday, in the Gene Cusic Classic Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla., beating Concordia-St. Paul 6-2 and dropping the nightcap 9-1 to Mercyhurst University.

Against Concordia sophomore Brittany Fales (Midland/Dow) earned her first collegiate win as she went the distance giving up five hits while striking out two. The Scots scored a pair of runs in the second inning to knot the score at two apiece. With two outs Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge) stole second after getting on board by a fielders choice and Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) knocked her in with a single up the middle. Emily Blahnik (Corunna) followed with her own single plating pinch runner Kelsey Rightenburg (Lexington/Croswell-Lexington).

Alma scored two more runs in the bottom of the third on a walk to Katie Seagraves (Lapeer/East), an RBI double by Liana Easterby (Troy) and a single by Miller. The Scots added two insurance runs in their half of the sixth inning with one out singles by Miller, and Gaudard. Blahnik and Sarah Johnson (Portland) laced two consecutive singles scoring Miller and Gaudard to finish the scoring. Gaudard and Blahnik finished the game with three hits and Missy Morcom (Chelsea) and Milller were two for three.

In the second game sophomore Jamie Christian (Armada) took the loss in her first outing of the season going five innings before being relieved by Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./North). Mercyhurst’s pitcher threw a four-hitter against the Scots. Alma had scoring opportunities in the fourth and sixth innings but double plays closed the door. The Scots scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh on walks to Fales and Erica Guitar (Croswell/Croswell-Lexington). Catilyn Ross (Merill) pinch ran for Fales and both moved up a base on a double steal. Ross then scored on a wild pitch.

Alma will have Wednesday off before continuing action on Thursday with Capital University and Augustana College.

Since 2003, twenty-three Alma College students have won prestigious national fellowships, scholarships and awards, including 13 Fulbright fellowships and multiple Udall, Truman, Marshall and Gates-Cambridge scholarships.
