Softball Lands Three on First Team All-MIAA

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its selections for All-MIAA awards and the Scots have landed three student-athletes on the conference's first team and two more on the second team. Emily Blahnik (Corunna), Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) and Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./North) each earned first team distinction while Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) and Missy Morcom (Chelsea) received second team honors. Megan Colligan (Northville/Novi), Taylor Erwin (Fenton), Allie Gooch (Charlotte) and Megan Knochel (Pinconning) were each named to the coaches' honorable mention list. 

Blahnik started 37 games for the Scots as they posted a 26-13 overall record, batting .348 with three home runs, five doubles and a triple. The starting right fielder, Blahnik boasts a fielding percentage of .970 with just one error in the field. The junior recorded a slugging percentage of .522. She was second in the MIAA in batting, hitting .462 in MIAA games.

Gaudard a sophomore, played in every game this season, leading the team in batting average with a .412 mark. Her four home runs - including her first career home run - were among the top batters in the conference. Her 19 RBI in MIAA games tied for tops in the league and 37 total bases led MIAA players.

Koechling, a freshman, ended the season with a 2.09 ERA and a 9-4 overall mark. In 83.2 innings pitched, she struck out 91 batters and held opponents to a .221 batting average. Her 1.91 ERA in league games and 6-2 record ranked fourth in the MIAA at season's end.

McDonald, a junior pitcher, posted an ERA of 0.73 in league games in six appearances, picking up a win and striking out 24 in 24.2 innings pitched. For the eyar, she posted a 2.19 ERA with a 7-5 overall record.

Morcom was among the team's finest with a batting average of.336, starting all 39 games of the season. Her six home runs led the team and her play in left field held consistent throughout the year. In MIAA games, she batted .400 with five doubles and two home runs and her 19 runs scored in MIAA games was seonc only to Kylee Brouwer of Hope.

Colligan earned honorable mention accolades with a .387 batting average for the season, including five home runs and 41 hits. The Scots' starting first baseman, she had just two errors in the field for th eyear for a .990 fielding percentage.

Erwin was named to the honorable mention list after hitting .303 for the year while Allie Gooch ended the year with a 2.40 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 58.1 innings pitched.

Megan Knochel started 38 of 39 games at third base, hitting 2.84 for the season with nine stolen bases and 16 sacrifice hits throughout the year.


 

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
