St. Mary's Drops Scots to Consolation Bracket

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Alma College softball team lost in first round action to St. Mary's College, 3-2.
They now face Hope or Olivet at 3:30 p.m. in Holland.

Against St. Mary's, the Belles scored two runs in the top of the second when Fusaro got on base when she was hit by the pitch. Heline reached base on a fielder's choic and went to second on an error in the field, allowing Fusaro score, unearned. Corrigan and Rashid were out before Grall singled to score Heline and give the Belles two runs in the second.

The Scots answered in the bottom of the third when Audra Reynolds (Six Lakes/Montabella) led off with a fly out to left before Missy Morcom (Chelsea) doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch before Megan Knochel (Pinconning) singled to score Morcom. Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) singled, moving Knochel to second and a Megan Colligan (Northville/Novi) single allowed Knochel to score. A Laura Bell ground out ended the inning with two runs on three hits.

It was the top of the fifth that sealed the game in favor of the Belles. Grall singled and Smid flied out to give the Belles a runner aboard with one out. A Davison single moved Grall to second and a Gajor single loaded the bases. Miesle hit a sac fly, scoring Grall and giving the Belles the game-winning run.

For the Scots, Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./North) threw a complete seven-inning game, striking out nine and allowing two earned runs and seven hits.

Key batters for the Scots included Megan Knochel who went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Colligan also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Alma continues play at the MIAA Tournament this afternoon.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
