MIDLAND, Mich. - Alma softball lost two games to Division II Northwood by a combined total of two runs, falling to 21-11 on the season. The Scots lost both games to Northwood, 1-0.

In game one, sophomore Alyssa Gooch (Charlotte) threw the complete game, scattering five hits and striking out four and allowing just one run - a home run in the fourth - enough for the Timberwolves to secure the win.

Northwood ace Lisa Shepard allowed just three hits - one each from Megan Knochel (Pinconning), Laura Bell (Walled Lake/Western) and Emily Blahnik (Corunna).

In game two, junior pitcher Kay McDonald allowed just one run in the first inning, striking out five batters in a complete game effort. The Scots were limited to just two hits in the game, coming from Missy Morcom (Chelsea) and Taylor Erwin (Fenton).

The Scots return to action Saturday when they host Calvin College at 1 p.m.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
