Scots Take Two from Adrian
Alma College softball bounced back to pick up two MIAA wins against Adrian Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs 9-0 and 8-7 on the road.
Alma is now 19-9 on the season and 8-4 in conference play.
In game one, Alma generated nine hits and nine runs - five earned - to out-hit the Bulldgos 9-3. The Scots scored four runs in the third, tacked on three more in the fourth and added two in the seventh for good measure.
Big hitters in game one included Megan Colligan who was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Both Laura Bell and Emily Blahnik knocked home runs in the game, both hitters going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Katie Koechling picked up the win for the Scots, throwing six innings in the shutout, striking out six and scattering just three hits.
In game two the Scots narrowly escaped, winning 8-7 despite a four-run Adrian seventh inning.
Alma led off with a run in the bottom of the first, but Adrian countered in the top of two with two runs of its own, adding another in the top of the third. The Scots countered with a two-run third to tie things up at three runs apiece and kept going, adding a run in the fourth and fifth and three more in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead.
But Adrian in the top of the seventh was determined and with two runners on base and no outs, Alyssa Gooch allowed a three-run homer to give Adrian six runs for the game. A follow-up single was followed by Sarah Tipton's appearance in the game, generating the final two outs and allowing the final run of the game, an unearned score on a wild pitch and two passed balls.
Pitching came from Kay McDonald who made the start and went 2.1 innings, striking out four and allowing three runs - only one earned - and two hits before Gooch came in, throwing four innings, scattering five hits. Tipton made the final two outs of the seventh to pick up the save.
Alma enjoys a 10-day hiatus to honor seniors with graduation on April 22 and returns to action April 25 when it hosts Tri-State.
