Maroon and Cream Split With Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Alma College softball team split with Defiance Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 4-0 and dropping the second game 6-5. With the split, Alma is now 13-5 on the season.

Alma led off with a 4-0 shutout victory on the arm of Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) who went six innings, facing 25 batters and scattering just five hits while striking out four and walking two. Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./North) wrapped up the seventh.

For game one, Missy Morcom went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI - no other Scot batter would generate more than one hit as Megan Knochel, Amy Gaudard, Taylor Erwain and Kristy Muxlow did just that.

Game two was not in the cards for the Scots. They scored twice in the top of the third as Defiance answered in the bottom of the inning.

Alma added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and the Yellow Jackets answered again with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Scots couldn't get anything going in the sixth, but Defiance did, scoring four runs before they could stop the charge.

The Scots managed just one run in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-5 in favor of Defiance but would strand two runners on base to end the game.

Megan Knochel (Pinconning) went 2-for-4 with two runs while Sarah Seals (Alma) went 2-for-2 with three RBI

More than a third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions.
