Alma Splits Games on Thursday

The Scots’ Softball team split a pair of games on Thursday winning the first game 2-0 versus Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and dropping the night cap to Augustana College 9-1.

Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill.) started the game against Rose-Hulman and went the distance to notch her second victory of the season. The Engineers never threatened as Koechling gave up one hit in the fifth inning and struck out ten. It was the fourth shutout for the Scots during their spring trip.

Alma did all their scoring in the first inning. Missy Morcom (Chelsea) led off the game with a single to left field and Megan Knochel (Pinconning) sacrificed her to second. Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) hit a bloop single to right field to put runners at the corners. Megan Colligan (Northville) plated Morcom with a single to right field, and Taylor Erwin knocked in Gaudard with a single to left field.

In the game against Augustana, Kay McDonald (Rosebush) lost her first decision to lower her record to 2-1. The Vikings struck in the first inning. Without any outfield fences on the diamond, a long fly ball turned into an inside the park homerun to give Augustana the lead. Alma tied the score in the second inning when Laura Bell reached first base on an error. Pinch runner Erica Guitar (Crosswell) was sacrificed to second by Erwin, and Trista Geier (West Bloomfield) hit an RBI single to left field. The Scots hit the ball hard all game but could never generate any more offense.

Due to a couple of Alma miscues the Viking’s scored three unearned runs in the second and another unearned run in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning Augustana scored four runs to end the game.

The Scots will finish their spring trip with a double header against Capital University on Friday.

More than 100 Alma College students and staff traveled to destinations in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi for service projects during winter break in February 2008. Alternative Break service experiences continue to gain popularity on Alma College’s campus,” says Sallie Scheide, assistant director in the Center for Responsible Leadership.
