Alma Scores 22 Runs to Improve to 4-0

The Alma College softball team continued their winning ways by scoring twenty-two runs on Tuesday while beating both The College of St. Benedict 8-0 and Augustana College 14-3 in five innings to improve to 4-0. In the opener Sophomore Allie Gooch (Charlotte) recorded her first collegiate win by throwing a three hit, seven strikeout shutout.

The Scots got on the board in the second inning by scoring three runs on singles by Emily Blahnik (Corunna) and Kristy Muxlow (Brown City). Another run was added in the third inning with an RBI single by Taylor Erwin (Fenton) knocking in Megan Colligan (Novi).

Alma scored four runs in the fifth inning to end the game. Consecutive singles by Amy Gaudard (Mt.Pleasant), Colligan, Laura Bell (Walled Lake), and Erwin accounted for the first two runs and then Kristy Muxlow drove in the final runs with a double.

In the second game Kay McDonald (Mt Pleasant) picked up her second win of the year striking out three while giving up seven hits. Augustana opened the scoring in the first inning and the Scots knotted the score at one a piece in their half of the inning. The Vikings scored again in the second and the Scots countered with four in their half inning. A walk to Missy Morcom, singles by Trista Geier, Megan Knochel (Pinconning), Gaudard, scored two runs and Colligan drove in two runs with a double to right field. In the fourth inning Alma scored nine runs to end the game. Megan Colligan smacked her first homerun of the season and RBI doubles by Lisa Cook (Alma) and Blahnik highlighted the inning.

 

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
