Tavidian and Bell Earn MIAA Player of the Week Honors

ALMA, Mich. - The MIAA Champion Alma College softball team boasts two MIAA Players of the Week as pitcher Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) and designated player Laura Bell (Walled Lake/Walled Lake Western) earned the honor for their performances in the MIAA Tournament last weekend.

Tavidian, a senior, earned MIAA Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career. She picked up a win and a save as the Scots won the MIAA Tournament with three victories. Over 11 innings, she struck out 17 batters, allowing two runs on six hits while opponents batted just .158 in the games.

Bell, a junior, batted .429 with hits in each of the three league tournament games. She also walked twice for an on-base percentage of .556. She earns MIAA Player of the Week accolades for the second time in her career.

Alma returns to post-season action Friday at 12 p.m. when the Scots face North Central (Ill.) at Scots Park in Alma, Mich.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
