Scots Pick Up Two Wins With Back-To-Back Shutouts Against St. Mary's

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College softball team improved to 21-7 (9-1 MIAA) with two shutout victories against St. Mary's Saturday (Apr. 16). The Scots defeated the Belles 6-0 in the first game as Leigh Ann LaFave (Bark River/Escanaba) was credited with the shutout while the second game was a 15-0, five-inning team effort as Mary Pietsch (Rogers City) carded the Scots' first inside-the-park home run since Danielle Pease in 2001.

In game one, LaFave gave up just one hit, striking out four in six innings of work. On offense, Alma scored steady and early with three runs in the first and second innings. Shortstop Amy Gaudard anchored the Scots at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the second game, Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) was credited with the win, throwing four innings and allowing just one hit while striking out five.

For the Scots at the plate, 18 different players saw at least one at bat as Shannon Harrington (Dewitt/St. Johns) went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, Pietsch went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. The Scots played error-free ball on defense while on offense Pietsch's inside the park home run led the charge. She and three others - Kristy Muxlow (Brown City), Emily Blahnik (Corunna) and Audra Reynolds (Six Lakes/Montabella) - knocked it out of Scots Park, combining for nine RBI.

Alma returns to action April 26 with its final home game of the regular season when the Scots host Kalamazoo at 3:30 p.m.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.
