Alma Shuts Out Albion, Remains Undefeated in MIAA

ALBION, Mich. - The Alma College softball team remains undefeated in the MIAA with back-to-back shutout victories at Albion College Saturday (Apr. 9). Alma picked up 2-0 and 5-0 wins on the afternoon. Alma improves to 17-6 overall and 5-0 in MIAA action.

In game one, senior ace Leigh Ann LaFave (Bark River/Escanaba) shut out the Britons, allowing just two hits and striking out nine in a complete seven inning gem. The Scots scored one run in both the third and the fifth innings to take the 2-0 victory. They led off with back-to-back errors from the Britons to put Audra Reynolds (Six Lakes/Montabella) and Mary Pietsch (Rogers City) on base. With Megan Knochel (Pinconning) at the plate, Reynolds and Pietsch picked up stolen bases while Reynolds was able to convert on an error by the Albion catcher to score the game-winning run.

With two outs in the fifth inning and Anne Westerman (Gaylord/St. Mary Cathedral) on first with a base on balls, Megan Colligan (Northville/Novi) singled to score Westerman from second.

In game two, Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) pitched a complete seven inning game, matching LaFave's nine-strikeout performance, scattering four hits.

The Maroon and Cream continued with scoring, posting two runs in the bottom of the first and third innings and adding another in the bottom of four. Colligan went 3-for-3 with two RBI for Alma while Westerman was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Alma returns to action April 14 when it travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., to face Calvin College.
