Scots Continue Winning Ways With the Longball

ALMA, Mich.
-  The Alma Scots softball team continued its winning ways with a sweep of Lake Superior State University in an afternoon doubleheader today at Scots Park in Alma. The Scots defeated the Lakers 6-0 and 9-5 in the respective games.

Game one of Friday’s action saw the Scots get another stellar pitching performance from senior Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) as the Scots would earn a 6-0 victory.  Tavidian held the Lakers to just two hits over seven innings in earning her third shutout of the season.  For the game she struck out seven and walked just two.  Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) went 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI to pace the offensive attack for the Scots.  Laura Bell (Walled Lake/Western) added two hits and a walk in her three plate appearances and also knocked in her fourth run of the season.

In the nightcap the Scots once again used the long ball to jump ahead early and than stave off a rally late in the contest as the Maroon and Cream escaped with a 9-5 victory.  Megan Colligan (Northville/Novi) started the fireworks early with a first inning grand slam.  Senior catcher Eileen Butler (Vestaburg) would add a three-run homer in the fourth.  Butler’s big-fly gave the Scots a seemingly comfortable 9-2 margin heading to the fifth.

After giving up another run in the fifth to make the score 9-3, sophomore Kay McDonald (Mt. Pleasant) would get herself into a bit of a jam in the top of the seventh inning when she allowed 2 runs, and would have to work out of a no-out bases loaded jam.  A fielder’s choice that produced a play at the plate, a pop-up, and a swinging strikout later and the Scots had secured thier twelfth victory of the season.  For the game McDonald went seven innings, allowing nine hits, five runs (four earned).  She walked two and struck out seven.

The Scots return to action Saturday afternoon when they host a doubleheader with Wittenberg. Play is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Scots Park.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”
