Scots Take Two From Defiance

The Alma College softball team collected 26 hits on Saturday to sweep Defiance College by the scores of 10-0 and 9-1 in two five-inning games. The doubleheader was originally scheduled at Scots Park but due to the late winter was moved to Defiance College and then changed again on Friday night to Adrian College due to rain in Ohio.

In the first game Missy Morcom (Chelsea) led off the game with her first solo shot of the year. Two outs later Megan Colligan (Novi) doubled and Andrea Lunsted pinch ran for Colligan. Shannon Harrington (St.Johns) plated Lunsted with a double to left field.

The Scots added three more runs in the second with singles by Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant)Anne Westerman (Gaylord), Morcom, Megan Knochel (Pinconning) and Colligan. The offense continued in the third with Morcom hitting her second home run of the day, a three-run version knocking in Audra Reynolds (Montabella) and Westerman. Christy Brewer (Clare), with her first of the season, tallied the final run of the game with a lead off homerun in the fourth.

Leigh Ann LaFave (Bark River/Escanaba) notched her third win of the year with a three-hit shutout while striking out three.

In the nightcap the Scots did not let down with their offense. In the first inning Knochel walked, Harrington reached base on an error and they both advanced on a passed ball. Colligan scored Knochel on a ground out and Gaudard hit a single up the middle to plate Harrington. Eileen Butler (Vestaburg) led off the second with her first round tripper of the year. Then the Scots opened the coiffers with five runs in the third on four hits and three walks.

Defiance tallied their only run of the day in their half of the third on two walks, a hit and a fielders choice. Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) shut down the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way to secure her fourth win of the season.  In the fourth inning Alma responded with two runs of their own on doubles by Emily Blahnik (Corunna), Kim Light (Howell) and a single by Westerman.

The 8-6 Scots will open the MIAA season on Wednesday as they take on Hope College at Scots Park at 2:30 p.m.
