Scots Pick Up Back-to-Back Wins at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio - Alma softball picked up back-to-back wins Saturday (Mar. 19) with 1-0 and 7-2 victories against Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. With the 7-2 win, Alma head coach Denny Griffin - already one of the NCAA's Winningest Coaches - picked up his 500th career win.
The Scots scored the only run of game one on an unearned run in the sixth inning, holding off an Ohio Wesleyan rally in the second game to complete the sweep Saturday at Mingo Park in Delaware, Ohio

The No. 14 Scots broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when, with two outs, Megan Colligan (Northville/Novi) lined a single to left field and continued to second when the ball got past Bishop outfielder Meredith Krajewski. Shannon Harrington (Dewitt/St. Johns) followed with a single to center, and pinch-runner Andrea Lunsted scored when OWU outfielder Carli Wittman did not field the ball cleanly.

In the nightcap, Alma took a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by Emily Blahnik (Corunna) and Eileen Butler (Vestaburg) and tacked on a third run on Missy Morcom's (Chelsea) RBI single in the inning. Butler drove in another run in the third and Colligan lined a two-run single to highlight Alma's three-run fourth.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard in the fifth when King reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a ground out and took third when catcher Janelle Dangler reached on an error.  Dangler then got caught in a rundown between first and second, with King scoring before the tag was applied to end the inning.

Ohio Wesleyan added a run in the sixth when Wittman walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third on ball four to Longstreth, then scored on a wild throw by Scot catcher Butler in attempting to pick Longstreth off at first.

With two OWU outs in the bottom of the sixth, the game was called on account of rain.

Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon)
picked up the win, pitching a complete game for the Scots.

Alma returns to action Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 3 p.m. at Northwood.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”
