Maroon and Cream Swept at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio - The Alma College softball team dropped a pair of games Friday (Mar. 18), losing to Ohio Northern 3-2 in eight innings in the first game and dropping the second game, 3-0.

In game one, the Polar Bears scored in the bottom of the first off starter Leigh Ann LaFave (Bark River/Escanaba). ONU held the lead and added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Needing two runs in the top of the seventh, Alma answered when, with two outs, Anne Westerman (Gaylord/St. Mary Cathedral) struck out and Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) grounded out to second base. Emily Blahnik (Corunna) stepped to the plate and gave the Scots a baserunner with an infield single. Julie Lee (Fruitport) entered the game to pinch run for Blahnik. Megan Colligan (Northville/Novi) came up big in the ensuing at-bat with a home run over the right field fence to even the score at 2-2.

The Scots' defense could not hold off the Polar Bears in the eighth, however, as ONU got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth.

Game two was a struggle for the Scots as well, playing five innings in cool temperatures. Senior Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) took the loss for the Scots, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on three hits, striking out six while allowing two walks.

Alma's Laura Bell (Walled Lake/Western) was the only Scot to get a hit in game two, coming in the first inning. ONU put up two runs in the second and another in the first to secure the win.

The Scots return to action Saturday (Mar. 19) when they face Ohio Wesleyan at 11 a.m.

Alma is one of only 100 colleges and universities to be named to the Templeton Honor Roll in the Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character Development.
