Alma Drops Two

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Alma College softball team lost a pair of games on Thursday in Ft. Myers, dropping the record to 2-4 in the early season. In the opener the Scots lost to No. 14 Augustana 5-2 and to Rochester Institute of Technology 3-2 in the nightcap.

Against Augustana, the Scots opened up the scoring with two runs in the third. Mary Pietsch (Rogers City) slapped a single to left field, Melissa Morcom (Chelsea) sacrifice pietsch to second base and Megan Knochel (Pinconning) drove the next pitch into the right field gap for a double, scoring Pietsch. Two batters later Eileen Butler (Vestaburg) plated Knochel with a double down the left field line.

Augustana cut the lead with a home run in their half of the third and added four more runs in the fouth inning.

Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) took the loss, striking out four and giving up six hits.

Against RIT, the Scots scored a run in the first inning on a bases loaded walk to Audra Reynolds (Six Lakes/Montabella) scoring Missy Morcom who had singled to lead off the inning, a walk to knochel and Butler loaded the bases. RIT tied the game on two walks and two passed balls in the third inning.

Alma regained the lead in the fourth with a walk to Anne Westerman (Gaylord/St. Mary Cathedral) who stole second, a single by Pietsch advanced Westeman to third and a passed ball made the score 2-1.

RIT scored the margin of victory in the fifth on an error, passed ball, and two base hits plating two runs.

Kay McDonald (Rose Bush/Mt. Pleasant) took the loss, the first of her career, going the distance and striking out four.

Ths Scots will take on Capital University and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) on Friday to close out their spring trip.

 

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
