Scots Split Again

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Scots split Tuesday's games winning the first 6-0 against Cabrini College and and dropping the second game 3-2 versus Rose Hulman to even their record to 2-2. In the opener, Melissa Tavidian (New Hudson/South Lyon) got on the winning track, scattering six hits and striking out six to even her record at 1-1.

The Scots got on the board with a three-run third inning. Emily Blahnik (Corunna) started the scoring with an RBI double driving in Megan Knockel (Pinconning) and then Shannon Harrington (Dewitt/St. Johns) two pitches later knocked the ball out of the park in centerfield for her first round tripper of the year. The Maroon and Cream added three more in the seventh with singles by Julie Lee (Fruitport), Mary Pietsch (Rogers City), Missy Morcom (Chelsea) got on board with an error scoring Lee, and Harrington delivered an two out single driving in Pietsch and Morcom.

In the second game the Scots opened the scoring with a walk to Harrington, and Knochel slapped a ball over the centerfielder's head for a triple to score Harrington. The Engineers would tie the game in the second with a leadoff home run and the Scots would take the lead in their half of the second inning. Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) walked, was sacrificed to second by Anne Westerman (Gaylord/St. Mary's Cathedral), and Audra Reynolds (Six Lakes/Montabella) would deliver an RBI double. Scoring opportunities arose in both the fifth and sixth innings for the Scots but failed to score. Rose Hulman took the lead for good in their half of the fifth on a single, a fielders choice, and an error. Leigh Ann LaFave (Bark River/Escanaba) took the loss giving up five hits while striking out six and was relieved by Kay McDonald (Rose Bush/Mt. Pleasant) in the fifth who gave up no hits in three innnings of relief.

Alma is off on Wednesday before they take on No. 8 Augustana College and Rochester Institute of Technology on Thursday.

 

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
