Alma Ranked 14th In Pre-Season NFCA Poll

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College softball has been picked 14th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation (NFCA) pre-season poll after finishing 39-9 a year ago.

The poll, voted on by eight Division III softball coaches from around the country, tabbed St. Thomas as the team to beat in 2005, garnering all eight first place votes. Moravian and Salisbury are tied at second while Chapman, Muskingum, Ithaca, Wheaton (Mass.), Augustana (Ill.), Washington University and Linfield round out the NFCA’s top 10.

Alma is the only MIAA team mentioned in the poll and will face No. 8 Augustana on Mar. 3 in Ft. Myers, Fla. Among teams receiving votes but out of the top 25, Alma will face Bluffton College on Mar. 25 to open the Scots’ home season. In current NFCA standings, only Division I University of Michigan (9) and Division II Grand Valley State (14) were among the nation’s top 25.

The Scots open the 2005 regular season Feb. 27 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla., where they face Dubuque at 11 a.m.

Alma College is one of the best colleges fostering social responsibility and public service, according to The Princeton Review and Campus Compact. It is one of 81 institutions in 33 states —and the only private college in Michigan — that The Princeton Review commends and features in its book, Colleges With a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement.
