Scots Lose Hard-Fought Battle Against Chapman

In their second game of the NCAA Division III National Tournament, the Alma College Scots were defeated by the Chapman University Panthers, 7-6. The hard-fought battle went fifteen innings and lasted over four hours. The defeat gave Alma their second loss of the tournament and leaves them tied for seventh in the nation.

Chapman (36-10) scored first in the second inning. Alma countered with four runs in the bottom of the third. In the top of the sixth, Chapman added three more runs to tie the game. In the top of the seventh, Chapman added two runs to take a two-run lead. Facing elimination, Alma (39-9) scored two runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh and nearly added another in a close call at the plate.

Neither team scored during the next seven innings. In the top of the fifteenth, a sacrifice fly brought home the go-ahead run for the Panthers. Alma battled back but was unable to score in the bottom of the inning.

Melissa Tavidian started at pitcher for the Alma Scots and went 6 and 1/3 innings striking out six batters. Paula Stanford came into finish the seventh inning for Tavidian. Leigh Ann LaFave finished the game for Alma, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings striking out five.

Erin Carson had four hits in seven at bats and added a run for the Scots. She also played great defense with twelve putouts and a pick-off. Katie Eustice had three hits, including one RBI. Colleen Trybus had four hits in six at bats and two RBIs. Laura Rochon added a hit, a run, and a RBI. Stephanie Smith added three hits while Kelly Scmuckal had a hit and a run scored. Laura Bell also added two hits.

 

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
