Denny Griffin begins his 27th year at Alma College and his 22nd at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. In his 21-year span he has amassed an overall record of 639-221, ranking him in the top ten of the most Winningest Division III Coaches All-time and also among Winningest Coaches All-time at an NCAA school by percentage. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 14 of his last 16 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.

He and his wife, Tammy, his son, Sean, and his daughter, Erin, reside in Alma. A native of Midland, Griffin earned a bachelor's degree in biology and physical education from Hope College. He holds a master's degree from Western Michigan University and is a certified athletic trainer.

 

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.
