MEN'S TENNIS: Scots Lose Heartbreaker to Lake Superior State, 5-4

Mar. 27, 2008

Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Men's Tennis Team (8-3, 1-2) continued to impress today as they played DII Lake Superior State University to a 5-4 loss that could have gone either way and was so hard fought, took six and a half hours to complete.

The Scots lost the first two singles matches but rallied to win the #3, #5 amd #6 to tie things up heading into doubles action. In doubles play, all three matches went 9-7 and after a split of the number two and three matches, things were all tied up 4-4 with the #1 doubles on the court. The match was intense and the Scots looked like they would come out victorious, taking LSSU to match point. However, the Lakers fought back and won 9-7 to secure the 5-4 dual match win.

Alex Montoye (Mt. Pleasant) and Dan Fraser (Lexington/Croswell-Lexington) suppled three of the four Alma wins as they each grabbed their singles and paired up for a doubles win. Kace Lovejoy (Traverse City/West) also won his singles for the Scots.

The match was bittersweet for Head Coach Chris Sandro, "I was extremely proud with how our guys played today. Two years ago, LSSU came in here and beat us 9-0, even though we came up a little bit short, it serves as a good example of how much this team has improved.  As nice as it would have been to win this match, the true purpose of playing it was to prepare us for some of more difficult conference tests down the road like Hope and Calvin.  I hope that the experience that we gained today, will serve us well down the road."

Box Score

The Scots hit the road this weekend with a double header in Bluffton, Oh. on Saturday and a doubles tournament in Battle Creek on Sunday.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
