Results Roll In For Thunder Doubles Tournament

The 2007 Thunder Doubles Tournament, pitting doubles teams from Grand Rapids Community College, Tri-State, Alma and Albion. Alma finished third in the setup with six points while GRCC took the top spot with nine points.

At one doubles, Chris Noel (Wyandotte/Roosevelt) and Dan Fraser (Croswell-Lexington) won the first round over the one doubles team from Adrian 8-6. In the second round, Alma lost to Tri-State 8-1. Round three saw Alma take GRCC to an 8-4 match, ultimately losing.

At two doubles, Josh Sanders (Warren/Fitzgerald) and Tom Hardin (Traverse City/Central) opened with a loss to GRCC, but narrowly, as they forced a tie break, losing 9-8 (7-5). In the second round, Hardin and Sanders defeated Adrian 8-4 and picked up an 8-5 win against Tri-State.

At three doubles, Brett Seymoure (Paw Paw) and Alex Montoye (Mt. Pleasant) narrowly defeated Adrian 9-8 (7-3) before losing to Tri-State 8-1 and to GRCC 8-2.

Finally, at four doubles, Alma's team of James Kruse (Midland/Bullock Creek) and David Bechtold (Idaho Falls/Skyline) picked up the only win of the day over GRCC, 8-3 but Alma would lose to Tri-State in the second round, 8-3. Wrapping things up, Alma defeated Adrian 8-2.

The Scots return to action Thursday when they host Aquinas at 3:30 p.m.

 

Since 2003, twenty-three Alma College students have won prestigious national fellowships, scholarships and awards, including 13 Fulbright fellowships and multiple Udall, Truman, Marshall and Gates-Cambridge scholarships.

 

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
