Scots Defeat Wabash in Season Opener, 5-4

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Alma College men's tennis opened the season in Indiana this weekend, facing both Huntington and Wabash College's. The Scots defeated Wabash College 5-4 while results from the match against Huntington were not available late Saturday evening.

Against Wabash, however, Alma got strong individual performances from Dan Fraser, Josh Sanders Alex Montoye and Tom Hardin, respectively, who picked up wins at two, three, four and five singles.

The contests at two and three singles were hotly contested as Fraser defeated Wabash's Adam Van Zee 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 and Sanders defeated Josh Paul 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

The only doubles victory came at two doubles as the team of Josh Sanders and Tom Hardin combined to defeat Sean Clerget and Adrian Starnes 9-7.

Alma returns to action Feb. 10 when it hosts Grand Rapids Community College at 1 p.m. in the Stone Recreation Center.

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Dennis Griffin

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
