Ahmet Demir Earns First Team All-MIAA Accolades

Freshman men's tennis player Ahmet Demir is a first team All-MIAA selection. Demir moved through the MIAA as the Scots' number one singles player, knocking off Albion's Andrew Lulek, Calvin's Ricky Tilton and ultimately losing in championship play to Kalamazoo's Julian Seelan.

Demir ends the season with a 12-4 overall record and a 5-1 record in MIAA matches.

At two singles, Dan Fraser ended the season going 1-2 in the MIAA Tournament, defeating Bryan Roth of Tri-State in the opening round and falling in semi-final action to Kalamazoo's Dave Atallah 6-1, 6-1. Ultimately, Fraser lost to third-seeded Stephen Malvitz of Hope College 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Fraser ends the season 7-9 overall and 2-4 in MIAA matches.

In three singles play, Chris Noel opened with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Dan Krsteski of Adrian before losing 6-0, 6-0 to Alec Kempster of Kalamazoo. In consolation play, Noel lost a hard fought battle to Nate Marshall 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

At four singles Josh Sanders fell to consolation play where he lost to Robert Dody of Hope 6-1, 6-0 to end the season with a 6-9 overall record.

In five singles action Ryan Kelly fell to consolation play after a 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 loss to Jon VandenBerg of Albion and then lost to third-seeded Zach Huber of Hope 6-0, 6-0.

At six singles, Tristan Wilson lost to Albion's Eddie Fornell 6-1, 6-2 and then to Mike Goorhouse of Calvin, 6-2, 6-1 to exit tournament play.

In doubles action, Ahmet Demir and Dan Fraser opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Tri-State's one doubles team then lost to top-seeded Kalamazoo 6-2, 6-1 and to number two seed Calvin in consolation play.

At both two and three doubles, the Scots lost in the first round and dropped the final matches in consolation play.

As a team, Alma ends the season 5-8 overall and 2-4 in MIAA matches. The Scots ended the season fifth in MIAA dual match standings, fifth in MIAA Tournament standings with 12.5 points and fifth in overall final team standings.

 

More than a third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region’s premiere performing arts facility.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
