Demir Moves Through MIAA Championship Set to Face K'zoo's Julian Seelan Today

KALAMAZOO, Mich.
- Alma College's number one singles player Ahmet Demir (Samsun, Turkey) advanced through first round and semi-final action to the MIAA Championship match at one singles to face Kalamazoo's top-seeded Julian Seelan this afternoon in Kalamazoo.

Dan Fraser (Croswell-Lexington) defeated Tri-State's Bryan Rogth 6-2, 6-1 in first round action before falling to Kalamazoo's Dave Atallah 6-1, 6-1 at two singles. At three singles, Chris Noel defeated Adrian's Dan Krsteski 6-4, 6-1 and lost to Kalamazoo's Alec Kempster 6-0, 6-0 in semi-final play.

Josh Sanders (Warren/Fitzgerald) lost in first round four singles action, 6-2, 6-2 but picked up a win in the consolation bracket against Matt Philhower of Tri-State after an injury to Philhower. Ryan Kelly (Saginaw/Heritage) lost early at five singles to Albion's Jon VandenBerg, winning the first set 6-3 but ultimately falling 6-0, 6-0 in the next two.

Senior Tristan Wilson (Paw Paw) lost to Eddie Fornell of Albion 6-1, 6-2 at six singles.

In doubles action, Ahmet Demir and Dan Fraser picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win against Tri-State's one doubles duo, losing in semi-final action to Kalamazoo's top-seeded Seelan/Hubbard combination 6-2, 6-1. In consolation action, Demir/Fraser lost to Calvin's Tilton/Zeilstra duo 6-2, 6-2.

At two doubles, Noel and Sanders lost to Hope's three-seed team and fell in consolation play to Adrian's two doubles team 7-6 (4), 6-0.

In three doubles, Wilson and Brett Seymoure (Paw Paw) lost to Albion's team 6-1, 6-1 and lost in consolation to Calvin's three doubles team.

Play continues Saturday (Apr. 29) afternoon in Kalamazoo.

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
