Good Start For Alma But Not Enough To Hold Off Spring Arbor

After winning 2 or the first 3 double matches the Alma mens tennis team jumped out to a suprising 2-1 lead over a very tough Spring Arbor team.  One of these matches included a spectacular come-from-behind victory at #2 doubles in which Josh Sanders and Chris Noel battled back from down 6-2, to win the pro-set 8-6.  Final scores for the double matches were as follows...

1. Demir/Fraser (Alma) def. Lentz/Hoy 9-7

2. Sanders/Noel (Alma) def. Heselschwerdt/DeRose 8-6

3. Mayes/Clark def. Kelly/Wilson (Alma) 8-2

Unfortunately the great start wouldn't hold up as Spring Arbors depth got the best of the Scots.  Spring Arbor swept the singles play 6-0.

1. Matt Lentz def. Ahmet Demir (Alma) 6-2, 4-2 (retired due to illness)

2. Jordan Hoy def. Dan Fraser (Alma) 6-0, 6-3

3. Troy Heselschwerdt def. Chris Noel (Alma) 6-2, 6-3

4. Matt DeRose def. Josh Sanders (Alma) 6-4, 6-4

5. Phil Mayes def. Ryan Kelly (Alma) 6-2, 6-0

6. Wade Clark def. Brett Seymoure (Alma) 6-3, 7-5

The Scots look to bounce back on April 5 when the host Grand Rapids Community College. Play is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its eighth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2008. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.
