Scots Enjoy Two-Week Hiatus Before Facing Aquinas Mar. 18

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College men's tennis continues to train indoors at the Stone Recreation Center on the Alma College campus after opening both regular and MIAA seasons in February.

The Scots opened play against Ferris State's club team on Feb. 17, defeating the Bulldog team 8-1. Due to NCAA regulations, this match will not count toward the team's overall record but offered an outstanding opportunity to get tuned up before opening MIAA league play on Feb. 18 against perrenial powerhouse Kalamazoo College.

The Scots were swept by the Hornets, 9-0 for its first loss of the regular season and dropping to 0-1 early in MIAA action.

The following week the Scots faced MIAA rival Hope in Holland and came away with an 8-1 defeat. Alma's number one singles player, Ahmet Demir (Samsun, Turkey/Namik Kemal Lisesi) came away with the Scots' lone victory, defeating Hope's Andy Ruemenapp 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

With Alma's spring break kicking off, the team continued play in Holland the following day against Wabash. The Scots dropped their third-straight match, 7-2. The Scots' only other win came from freshman Dan Fraser (Lexington/Croswell-Lexington) as he defeated Adam Van Zee 6-3, 7-5.

Demir won handily, 6-0, 6-1 as Fraser picked up his second-straight win, 6-0, 6-2. Ryan Kelly (Saginaw/Heritage), Josh Sanders (Warren/Fitzgerald) and Tristan Wilson (Paw Paw) each picked up their first individual victories of the season as well. For the first time, Alma also won in doubles action as Demir and Chris Noel won 8-5 at the number one doubles spot and Fraser and Sanders won by the same margin at number two doubles.

Rounding out early season action, the Maroon and Cream travelled to Defiance and won 6-3, improving to 2-3, 0-2 MIAA before a three-week hiatus.

Demir won his fourth-straight match 6-1, 5-2 against Defiance's Stephen Faerber as Fraser took his third-consecutire match, 6-4, 6-0. At number three singles, Chris Noel picked up his first individual win of the year against Adam Fausey, 6-3, 6-4 as Josh Sanders rounded out singles winners at the number five spot.

Fraser and Sanders won 8-4 at the number two doubles spot, also moving to 2-2 on the season. Only the duo of Ryan Kelly and Tristan Wilson continues to search for a doubles victory after the early portion of the Alma men's tennis schedule.

Alma returns to action Mar. 18 when it travels to Aquinas and gets back to MIAA competition on Mar. 21 when it hosts Albion College.
