Scots Conclude First Day of MIAA Tournament

Day One Results

HOLLAND, Mich. - In the first day of MIAA men's tennis tournament action, the Scots drew difficult seedings and met with frustration on the day.

At number one singles, Lance Kelly fell to Albion's Jason Ryan, 6-0, 6-1 but defeated Adrian's Dan Krsteski 6-2, 6-2 in consolation play. At two singles, Andy Steiner of Tri-State defeated Alma's Ryan Kelly, 6-3, 6-0. At three singles, Hope's Andy Phillips downed the Scots' Shawn Bolton, 6-0, 6-2. At four singles, Ricky Tilton of Calvin defeated Nick Green 6-0, 6-1 while Green advanced to the consolation finals, defeated Ryan Schmidli of Adrian, 6-1, 6-0. Radi al-Radi faced Calvin's Dan Volkema and fell 6-1, 6-2 but prevailed in the consolation match, defeating Rich Powers of Adrian, 6-1, 6-2. Rounding things out in singles action, Tristan Wilson fell to Hope's Dustin Ruch 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Lance Kelly and Shawn Bolton squared off against Jonathan Miedema and Ricky Tilton of Calvin, falling 6-0, 6-0. The duos of Nick Green and Radi al-Radi and Tristan Wilson and Ryan Kelly also faced defeat at the conference tournament Friday.

 

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
