SCOTLAND YARD NEWS: Getting Ready For Homecoming

09-25-08

The past week has been a tough one for the Scots.  The varsity team has seen two losses of late.  A 2-1 defeat against regionally ranked Hiram College, and a last-minute heartbreaker in the MIAA opener against Adrian.

Despite the lack of winning results, the guys are continuing to work hard in practice.  It really helps to know that we’ve been in every game that we’ve played so far, with almost every game being decided by a lone goal.  We’ve really been trying to lock down and organize our defense.  In addition, we’ve made it a prime focus to progressively build our attacks out of the back by getting control of the ball and finding our feet rather than bypassing the middle of the field.  And as usual, we’re continuing to look for guys to step up and put the ball in the net.  For anyone who has seen the past couple of games, they can attest that we’ve not had trouble getting chances, but it’s taking advantage of those chances and finishing the ball that we’ve struggled with.

With all of the hard work in practice, it’s clear that the guys have moved beyond the past couple games and are ready to step it up.  With that, the reserve team is beginning to realize it’s utility as injury problems begin to plague the varsity squad and players are being called up to fill the fresh gaps.  Just recently, the Scots have seen Geoff Ferguson, Josh Plaska, and Dan Laatz fall to knee injuries.  Not to mention that some of the reserve players are starting to understand what it’s going to take in order to help out the varsity squad.  They’re quickly realizing our most recent setback in not scoring goals, and the necessity of giving a 100% effort for a full 90 minutes, as well as taking advantage of our offensive opportunities.

More than 100 Alma College students and staff traveled to destinations in South Carolina, Kansas, Tennessee, and Texas for service projects during winter break in February 2009. "Alternative Break service experiences continue to gain popularity on Alma College's campus," says Sallie Scheide, assistant director in the Center for Responsible Leadership.
