SCOTLAND YARD NEWS: Pre-Season Wrap-Up

08-22-08
It’s Friday, August 22, 2008, and the boys have just finished a grueling week of three-a-day practices.  The guys came in a week ago full of smiles and laughs, returning players joking with one another and mixing with the new players.  In all of the fun and excitement though, there was slight sense of nervousness with the 2-mile fitness test looming in everybody’s minds.  However, once that was done and taken care of the anxiousness to lace up the boots and get on the pitch was obvious.

The guys hit the field Monday morning for their first true training session of the 2008 season with a renewed sense of hope for the possibilities that this year could hold.  And they continued to hit the field morning, day, and night all the way through the rest of the week.  Initially the practice sessions focused on both fitness and technical work, while we left the evening sessions to 11v11’s so that we could see how the guys would work together.

Eventually we moved into more tactical sessions so that the new players could fully understand the system of play that we want to implement, and the returning players could get a refresher.  From 2 and 3 man defending, to methods of attack, we covered all that we could before the sun would go down and we’d be forced to retire for the evening.  It’s clear the guys understand the opportunities that are available for them this year and the work that it will take to be successful.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. "It's a huge honor," says faculty director Dave Zerbe. "You can't apply to perform there; they seek you out."
