SCOTLAND YARD NEWS: Calvin Game

Friday, October 26, 2007
Written by: Jason Stanley, Assistant Coach

We squared off against the conference leading Calvin Knights on Tuesday afternoon in Grand Rapids and suffered our worst defeat of the year, 5-0.  We got ourselves off to a promising start as Mark Daisy ripped a shot of the post in the opening minutes of the game and Andrew Waligorski saw his header from a corner kick service skip just over the crossbar.  After some frantic first few minutes, we settled in and played fairly well in a somewhat modified formation to deal with Calvin’s midfield play.

We found ourselves down 1-0 at half but very much still in the game.  We told the boys at half that it was going to take a tremendous effort in terms of work rate to come out of the second period with a victory.  Unfortunately, Calvin had the same idea and slotted in a goal minutes into the second half on way to 3 additional 2nd half goals.  Credit to Calvin, who showed in the second period why they are sitting atop the conference standings.  We were just not able to deal with their physical nature and strong play in the center of the park.

We’ve had two solid days of training that have included quite a bit of playing.  We are also nursing a few injuries back to health.  Mark Daisy went down with an ankle injury after being tackled from behind in the Calvin match and did not play beyond the 20th minute.  He trained yesterday and should be fit for Saturday’s game.  Scott Snyder continues to tend to a sprained ankle and is day-to-day.

The loss was a tough way to end our road campaign, a campaign that we struggled in throughout the year.  The good news is that we have three home games to finish out our schedule with a highly-anticipated rematch against Olivet this Saturday at Scotland Yard where we will look to avenge a last second loss we suffered in Olivet.  Game time is at 2 p.m.

Alma’s “green” residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.
