Tuesday we traveled down to Albion for a very important road conference match. We had been slipping the last few games and really needed a win to get back on track. With some solid play and a few bounces that went our way, we were able to get a hard-fought 1-0 victory in overtime.
Mark Daisy was still out due to injury so Ben Queen retained his spot in the starting eleven at forward for the match. It was back and forth to begin with while we tried to adjust to the spread-field possession Albion was keeping. We had a significant wind advantage in the first half and were able to use that to our advantage for most of the half. Our best chance came off a set piece just before intermission from about 20 yards out, Kevin Cross seeing his effort sail just over the right corner.
We were under fire for a large majority of the second half, having the wind to our disadvantage. Albion saw a half volley carom off the post early in the period and was able to put our defense under a good deal of pressure. We managed to hang on through the half courtesy of some key saves by Anthony.
We were able to get the wind to start the overtime period. The first minutes saw Albion knocking on the doorstep of our goal, but we were able to hold them off and win a free kick just inside the midline. The service came bouncing out of the box right to Dan Laatz who took a settling touch and hit a screamer over the Albion goalkeeper for the sudden-death victory.
It was great to get a key victory on the road and play well while doing so. We managed to get the breaks that day, but I think it’s always sobering to remember that things could have just as easily gone the other way. In the end it was a big win for us heading into some very important conference rematches in the next week.
We had a light regeneration on Wednesday and will train hard today and tomorrow in preparation for Saturday’s away contest against Adrian.
