SCOTLAND YARD NEWS: Olivet Week

Thursday, October 4, 2007
Written by: Jason Stanley, Assistant Coach

This week marked the beginning of 4 consecutive games on the road starting on Wednesday at Olivet College.  We had a solid training on Monday with some 1 v. 1 play and 9 v. 9 games to goal.  I had the rare occasion of hopping in the mix which was fun and, of course, frustrating as I tried to shake the rust off.  It rained a good Scottish rain, softening up the practice field a bit, and I think in the end we had a good combination of fun and intensity.

Wednesday was light in preparation for our game the following day—a little ball work and some finishing to goal.  Thursday we squared off against Olivet and endured the most disappointing loss of the season.  We knew that Olivet had good, strong forward play, and they proved it to us about midway through the first half as they took a 1-0 lead.  We were able to get one back in the closing seconds of the half as Santi Lopez fed Mark Daisy on a service with about 5 seconds to go that Mark headed in to tie things up with 2 seconds left on the clock.

The second half was primarily a stalemate with both teams focused on the officiating toss-up that had developed throughout the game.  Both of us had our share of chances, but with less than a minute left, we gave the ball away at midfield, got ourselves out of position and gave up a very disappointing goal with 13 seconds left in the game.

No doubt about it, the loss was a tough one to swallow.  It’s definitely a loss that will reveal the character of our team in the next few days.  But, as we agreed leaving the field: it’s over with, and we have to start getting ready to play at Hope on Saturday.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ‘07 students explored important cultural sites in China, worked to restore a Jewish Holocaust cemetery in Poland, analyzed ethic politics in Scotland, and studied medieval literature in London.
