We left in the afternoon Friday on a two hour trip to Rochester College for our 5 pm match. We ended up playing just outside the college at nearby Borden Park. A congested field and our inability to settle the ball down and possess left us in a track meet for most of the first half. We were able to improve possession in the second half and knock the ball around a bit, allowing us to open things up and get several more chances on goal. Mark Daisy found the net with a header off a service from Kevin Cross for our lone goal, shortly after Rochester had found net. Two overtime periods saw some great chances for us, but ultimately was not enough time for us to find net with a game-winner.
We had a light training at the game field on Saturday after the women’s match in preparation for Sunday’s contest against Holy Cross College. It would be our first home match at Scotland Yard and a welcome change from a tough early road schedule.
The reserve squad was in action first on Sunday as they beat Saginaw Valley State’s club team 2-1. Goals for us were scored by freshmen Ryan Nevins and Ian Kurth. Several of the boys were able to get some valuable minutes in the reserve match before dressing for varsity allowing them to stay sharp and, more importantly, stay fit. The reserves will be in action again this Thursday at home against Adrian College at 4 pm.
The playing surface was in pristine condition and the weather even better for Sunday’s varsity match. We started shortly after 3 pm as the women’s team took visiting Wilmington College into overtime, but eventually lost 2-1. Playing on the largest surface we had seen to date, we were able to open up play significantly from the opening whistle and possess the ball much better than we had been in previous games. Five goals for was certainly a significant improvement, but more importantly two of the goals marked some important firsts for our players. Nate Weirauch opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal and then followed with an assist to Mark Daisy for the second goal. Freshman Jeff Beck also scored his first collegiate goal to open the scoring in the second half and make it 3-0. We certainly weren’t pleased about conceding two goals, but 5-2 was a good result and a good first win for our team.
We are unfortunately still making too many mental errors, two of which cost us goals against Holy Cross. But, we had some fantastic combination play which led to a high tally for us, and it was certainly good to get our first win of the season. I think we are all eagerly anticipating this Wednesday’s match at home against Adrian College as we open up our MIAA conference schedule. Game time is at 4 pm.
